Verdict

The premise works and the team is credible. BCCI has said it won't allow anything controversial unless it ends well, and that changes several episodes. Fix four things before you send it.

  1. Errors BCCI will notice. The cover misspells Indian Premier League, seven names are misspelled, and two claims are wrong.
  2. No ask. The deck never says what you need from BCCI or from JioHotstar.
  3. No origin story. None of the six episodes covers how the IPL began, which is its most dramatic chapter.
  4. Controversy that doesn't end well. Slide 2 sells "challenges and controversies", and episodes 3, 4 and 6 rely on stories without a happy ending.

How to work with BCCI's rule

Every setback on screen has to end in a comeback. Use the same beat order in every episode, so the setback always comes before the breakthrough and no episode ends on a low.

The betthenThe setbackthenThe breakthroughthenWhat it meant to fans

The drama then comes from the sport itself, such as auctions, long waits, near misses and comebacks. That suits both rooms. BCCI gets a celebration, and JioHotstar still gets stakes.

02

Fix first

S1ErrorChange "Indian Premiere League" to "Indian Premier League".
S20ErrorFix seven names: Dale Steyn, AB de Villiers, Kumar Sangakkara, Matthew Hayden, Dinesh Karthik, Sanjiv Goenka and Ishan Chatterjee. Write Shah Rukh Khan in full.
S8ErrorSaurabh Tiwari is spelled Tiwary.
S18ErrorErika Morris flew in for the 31 May final, not in June. Get her consent before you name her.
S22-24ErrorChange "has lead" to "has led", "Kaun Bang Crorepati" to "Kaun Banega Crorepati" and "Grey" to "Gray". The Kellogg's link opens the Muve Acoustics video.
S16StaleGujarat Titans reached the 2026 final, so "Can GT thrive without Hardik?" already has an answer.
S2BCCI ruleReplace the "Challenges & controversies" pillar with "Comebacks".
S4BCCI ruleTake "controversy" and "controversies" out of the fans slide.
S11-12BCCI ruleRebuild episode 3 around CSK's and the Royals' return. Cut "When ambition turns toxic" and "When your faith is betrayed", and name no individuals.
S14BCCI ruleCut the Impact Player critique and the Dube quote. That also removes the wrong claim about other leagues.
S10BCCI ruleTell the end of Deccan Chargers only as Hyderabad's comeback, with the Sunrisers' title in 2016.
S18BCCI ruleRemove Sandeep Lamichhane.
S1RiskChange the title. "The Game Changer" is Shahid Afridi's autobiography, and JioHotstar already has an IPL show called Power Play.
NewAddAn ask slide for each room, a budget range, deliverables and a release plan.
NewAddAn editorial line slide saying the series shows setbacks only where they end in a comeback.
NewAddAn origin episode, or an origin cold open for episode 1.
AllChangeReplace the AI images with real archive stills marked "for pitch use only".
S21ChangeRebuild the timeline around the 16 December auction.
03

BCCI's rule, story by story

BCCI will allow a controversy only if it ends well. Here is how each sensitive story in the deck, or in this review's earlier suggestions, holds up.

Lalit Modi

Cut
How it endsBCCI banned him for life in 2013, and he lives abroad. The deck doesn't mention him.
What to doLeave him out. Tell the founding story through the 2007 World Cup win, the auction and the owners, without naming a founder.

Mallya and Srinivasan

Cut
How it endsVijay Mallya, RCB's founding owner, left India in 2016 facing loan-default cases. N Srinivasan, whose company owned CSK, had to step aside as BCCI president in 2014 because of the 2013 case.
What to doKeep both off screen. Start each team's story with its players and fans.

2013 spot-fixing

Comeback
How it endsCSK won the 2018 title in their first season back, and the Royals reached the 2022 final.
What to doOne line on the two-year suspension, no names, and the rest of episode 3 on the return. Confirm this with BCCI first.

Deccan Chargers

Comeback
How it endsDeccan was terminated in 2012. Hyderabad won the title again with the Sunrisers in 2016.
What to doKeep it only as Hyderabad's comeback.

Hardik and the 2024 boos

Comeback
How it endsThe Wankhede crowd booed him as MI captain. Two months later he bowled the last over as India won the T20 World Cup, and the same crowd chanted his name at the victory parade.
What to doKeep it as a redemption story. It also shows the series isn't simply promoting MI, which matters because Reliance owns MI and controls JioStar.

Ashwin and Buttler, 2019

Comeback
How it endsThe MCC made it a normal run-out in 2022, and the two played together for the Royals that year.
What to doKeep it. Ashwin is already on the talking-heads list.

Bengaluru stampede

Ask BCCI
How it endsEleven people died at RCB's 2025 celebration.
What to doDon't show the 4 June 2025 celebration at all. Tell RCB's first title through the final and the 2026 repeat. Ask BCCI whether a short dedication card is acceptable.

Unmukt Chand and Saurabh Tiwary

Ask BCCI
How it endsTiwary is now secretary of the Jharkhand cricket association. Unmukt left Indian cricket for the US.
What to doKeep Tiwary, with his new role as the ending. Drop Unmukt unless BCCI agrees.

Zee's rebel league, 2007

Ask BCCI
How it endsBCCI's 2009 amnesty brought its players back, and Ambati Rayudu went on to win six IPL titles.
What to doOptional. Tell it only through Rayudu's return, and only if BCCI agrees.

Impact Player critique

Cut
How it endsIt isn't over. BCCI deferred a decision on the rule's future in September 2026.
What to doCut the critique. If the rule appears at all, show an uncapped player who got a game because of it.

Sandeep Lamichhane

Cut
How it endsA rape case that ended in acquittal in 2024.
What to doRemove him, and never imply guilt anywhere. Use Afghanistan's rise (Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad) instead.

Kochi and Pune Warriors

Cut
How it endsBoth teams left the league in legal disputes.
What to doLeave them out.

The 2021 season break

Cut
How it endsThe season paused during India's second Covid wave and finished in the UAE.
What to doShow the 2020 bio-bubble season and skip the 2021 break.

Other things they'll ask about

  • Central questions. Episode 1 asks whether the IPL "can do more", episode 3 asks whether "some scars never disappear", and episode 4 asks whether its rules "limit the talent of tomorrow". Ask questions that point to the comeback, such as "How did CSK win their fans back?"
  • Bad Boy Billionaires. Dylan Mohan Gray co-directed it, and its subjects include Vijay Mallya and Subrata Roy, whose Sahara group owned Pune Warriors. Expect the question, and say which episodes he will direct.
  • The title. "The Game Changer" is Shahid Afridi's 2019 autobiography and a 2025 Ram Charan film. JioHotstar already streams Power Play 2024, and the fixing league in Inside Edge is the Power Play League. Candidates to test are Twenty, Prime Time and The League.
04

Structure

What isn't working

  • Five of the six episodes put the setback after the breakthrough, so they end on a low. BCCI's rule needs the opposite order.
  • Rajat Patidar carries episodes 2, 4 and 5, and RCB's 2025 title appears in all three.
  • Episodes 1 and 4 both cover talent and the auction. Episodes 2 and 5 both cover franchise loyalty.
  • The episodes are themes with no timeline, so viewers never see the league grow.
  • Episode 5 never names the dynasties. CSK and MI have five titles each.
  • Episode 4's title promises "equality" and never explains it.

One option, in time order, with every episode ending well

1

The bet

2007 to 2008The T20 World Cup win and the four million people at the homecoming, the franchise auction with Shah Rukh Khan and Ambani, McCullum's 158 on the first night, and Warne's Royals winning as the cheapest team.
2

Prime time

2008 to 2012One match a night to compete with the 8 pm serials, Bollywood owners, the 2009 season moved to South Africa in weeks, and KKR's first title in 2012.
3

The return

2016 to 2018Two teams sat out two seasons. CSK came back with a squad people called Dad's Army and won the 2018 title. The Royals rebuilt and reached the 2022 final.
4

The auction

TalentScouts, Bumrah, Rinku, Siraj, Patidar going unsold and then becoming captain, and the 16 December auction filmed live.
5

Loyalty

Fans and dynastiesMI and CSK with five titles each, RCB's 18-year wait and back-to-back titles, Hardik's boos turning to cheers, Gujarat's debut title, and Kohli.
6

The world's league

2020 onwardThe 2020 bio-bubble season, ₹48,390 crore in media rights, owners buying teams abroad, the WPL, LA 2028, Sooryavanshi, and the 20th season.
05

Additions for Indian audiences

From the Acquired episode

  • Four million people lined Mumbai's streets for the 2007 T20 World Cup team. The bus took 11 hours from the airport to the stadium.
  • Shah Rukh Khan preferred football. A Nokia shirt deal was in place before the auction, and he called the stake his life savings.
  • IMG's Andrew Wildblood says they built the IPL to compete with 8 pm serials, because women controlled the remote in single-TV homes.
  • In 2008 Mumbai sold for $112 million and the Royals for $67 million. In 2026 the Royals sold for $1.65 billion.
  • Per match, IPL media rights rank second only to the NFL, ahead of the Premier League.
  • Smartphones in India went from about 30 million in 2016 to about 800 million in 2022, and the IPL moved onto them. Let an interviewee say this, not the narrator.
  • IPL owners now own teams in South Africa, the US, the UAE and England.
  • The hosts argue that a full-league series like Drive to Survive would do well globally, and that Netflix's Cricket Fever fell short by following only MI.

Other additions

  • Small-town players, with their families on camera. Rinku Singh, Mohammed Siraj, T Natarajan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
  • The chants. Whistle Podu, Ee Sala Cup Namde, Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo, Duniya Hila Denge.
  • The moments people rewatch. McCullum's 158, Gayle's 175*, Kohli's 973 runs in 2016, Malinga's last ball in 2019, Jadeja's last-ball four in 2023, Rinku's five sixes, and Sooryavanshi's 35-ball hundred at 14.
  • Hardik's 2024. Booed at the Wankhede in April, cheered there in July.
  • The 2019 Ashwin and Buttler run-out, which ended with the two as teammates in 2022.
  • Women. The deck has no women players. RCB and MI have each won the WPL twice, and India won the 2025 Women's World Cup.
  • Mallika Sagar, the first woman to run the IPL auction.

Missing slides

Why nowIPL 2027 is the 20th season, and BCCI has promised a celebration.

07

Talking heads

  • The list leaves out the players the episodes depend on: Kohli, Rohit, Bumrah, Hardik, Patidar, Rashid, Narine and Sooryavanshi.
  • Add Raina, Gayle, Pollard, McCullum, Yuvraj, Jadeja, Rayudu, Andrew Wildblood, Manoj Badale, Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, a scout, and the new owners of RCB and the Royals.
  • The only women are two owners, and the deck names no fans.
  • Jay Shah now chairs the ICC. Ishan Chatterjee and Siddharth Sharma are JioStar executives. The BCCI president, Mithun Manhas, and secretary, Devajit Saikia, are missing. Sanjog Gupta, now ICC CEO, ran the IPL broadcast for years.
  • Simon Chadwick is an academic, so call that column "Commentators and experts".
08

Timeline

The plan has research in November, every interview in December, the edit in January and February, and delivery in March. That leaves no time for contracts or BCCI approvals. The IPL 2027 auction is on 16 December in Goa, and clearing 20 years of archive usually takes months.

A two-phase plan is safer. Deliver a 60 to 90 minute special or the first episodes before the season, then finish the series with 2027 footage after the final. Film the auction either way.

09

Design

  • Real archive stills will sell a documentary better than AI images. Mark them "for pitch use only".
  • Episode slides run to about 250 words. Use one slide per episode with a logline, three faces and one key moment.
  • Text over photos on slides 12 and 18 is hard to read.
  • The trailer images on slide 5 aren't links.
